Apricity West 4

March 29, 2024 - Friday
Rich started preparing to depart on Monday - remove wheel covers, pick up patio rug, check tires, stow away as much as possible inside the rig, etc.  Then we went to Terri and Jim’s for afternoon laundry, music, storytelling, reminiscing while waiting for Jim to finish up remote work in his studio. Since he’s the bartender, we put him right to work making cocktails for our last time sitting in the backyard. It was fun to hear his journal entries of the weekends we’ve been here in February. We covered a lot of ground this year in Tucson and neighboring areas. If we ever need an alibi, we can refer to his journal for exact times of our whereabouts!

March 30, 2024 - Saturday
Since tomorrow will be a busy day packing up, we are having Easter dinner today - Jim’s mother joined us. Always a brightly colored table to display our last feast.

We will miss this precious slice of paradise in the desert. Pictures don’t do it justice.

Terri prepared a salad, spiral ham, potatoes au gratin, and roasted asparagus. Delicious!

On top of that, she made scratch brownies which Jim embellished with ice cream, chocolate syrup, and a cocktail cherry on top! We wrapped up the day with a mini-concert of songs we have been working on religiously. It was probably our best showing so far - good thing because it was our last chance to get it right. Terri is singing more now and sounds terrific. Next year we will be doing harmonies for sure.

Marilyn stopped over - I love this sweatshirt from Quartzsite.

We see Jeep Wranglers all the time as they are a popular “toad" for RVers. The mystery was why they have rubber duckies lined up on their dashboard.

According to Google:
The act of placing a rubber duck on someone's Jeep-called Jeep "ducking" and/or "Duck Duck Jeep"-began with one person, named Allison Parliament, from a small town in the Canadian province of Ontario. She unknowingly started a movement of kindness, fellowship, and recognition with that first rubber duck she placed on a Jeep.

Allison's reason for perching a little yellow duck on a Jeep Wrangler just like hers that she saw in a parking lot was simply to bring herself a small sense of joy after a frightening verbal and physical encounter with someone earlier in the day. Two years later, that single gesture has morphed into the Jeep ducking craze that has swept throughout the Jeep enthusiast community in the United States as well as in nearly a dozen other countries around the world.

March 31, 2024 - Sunday  HAPPY EASTER 🐣✝️
With rain in the forecast, the outside is all picked up and little by little we are securing everything inside. A tradition has been to go to Omar’s Cafe at TTT Truck Stop with Terri and Jim before we say our sad goodbyes. The meal was delicious and we went back to our tiny home and sat inside to recap Jim’s journaled March adventures. It became evident that there certainly is a theme to our ventures - FOOD! We invited Marilyn to join us and there are always connections - Jim and Marilyn are both alumni of Oregon State University.

T & J presented us with a gift bag filled with surprises - 4 pack of wine, a bottle of Antica Formula vermouth, a hummingbird yard decoration with a small bell, 4” flour tortillas, cool stickers for our new water bottles. We will miss them terribly🥺

April 1, 2024 - Monday  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NORA 💕
Rich’s daughter, Nora, is celebrating her birthday in Encinitas, CA with a long time dear friend.

Destination Deming, NM for 2 days - we drove through Texas Canyon which is always jaw dropping to see the upcrop of ginormous boulders.

Entered New Mexico and the Mountain Time Zone (now only 2 hours difference from back home) and crossed the Continental Divide [a separation of the drainage of watersheds (rivers) to the Atlantic (including Gulf of Mexico) vs. Pacific Oceans] - all in just 3.5 hours.

Trucks lined up on the other side doing construction work - grinding the old pavement to make ready for the new.

We got all set up before the rain started, but it is windy and cold. In the process, I set the clock on the microwave. When Rich came inside, he was trying to set it. Ummm - what are you doing? I already did that. Well, turns out that the fuse blew and after testing it, we think the microwave/convection oven is $hot! Will test again in Fort Stockton in case it is a power thing here. Eighteen rigs came in today - that’s a lot.

One of our friends here, Dennis, is in Las Vegas celebrating his 80th birthday with 14 family members from as far as Alaska and the Caribbean! We are sorry not to see him, but so happy that his family is with him for this special occasion.

April 2. 2024 - Tuesday
Much nicer weather today, so we sat outside watching rig after rig pull out. Then one pulled in right next to us - a brand spanking new Winnebago Class A Via which he just picked up in Dallas yesterday. On his way here, he was hit with high winds and hale - you guessed it - 3 pings in the windshield they just installed before pick up. He and his wife have been renting RV’s for years and now that he retired, they bought this one which he is driving home.

A woman walking her dog asked Rich about his Berkshire sweatshirt. Turns out that Terri and Jeff are from Toland, Massachusetts - just 1/2 hour away from Lee! They have a log cabin on 60 acres and have raised the chickens, goats, etc. until he retired from the Fire Department and they decided to RV. After doing nothing productive for a while, they decided to go to RV Tech School so they could work while on the road. So as soon as they pull into a park with their sign on the truck, customers are knocking on their door which gets to be overwhelming.

Fran and Rich came over this afternoon for a visit. Good to see them and have a lively conversation. They have a DVD collection of close to 1000 movies and view them systematically (alphabetically). Fran is a self proclaimed "yarn-aholic" and crochets all shapes and sizes of critters to co-sign at the Art Center.

She has a kit to do this cute platypus:

John and Geri pulled in late in the afternoon, followed by Dot and Harvey. We missed them - did a lot of catching up on life at North Ranch and what to expect in Mason, TX.

April 3, 2024 - Wednesday
Destination Ft. Stockton, TX for these three RV’s. We have reservations at Ft. Stockton RV Park where Rich was a manager; they are staying at Hilltop RV Park. We hit the road at 7:30 and had smooth sailing until road construction into El Paso. It slowed traffic a little, but not a big deal.

View of Mexico from Interstate 10:

Entering Fort Stockton - iron figures on the hillside:

By the way, our microwave is officially shot!

April 4, 2024 - Thursday
Destination Mason, TX for a Total Eclipse party. Bill Strickler used to live at North Ranch and invited several friends from there to his ranch. He and Linda have been planning it for a year, so I sure hope the weather cooperates. But it will still be a party with great people!

When we got on this 2 lane road, the speed limit dropped to 75mph! 😳

We saw cattle, pigs, sheep, donkeys, goats, deer and a lone llama along the way. The wild flowers of Texas were like a carpet on the side of the road - blue bonnets and  Indian paint brushes. Mesquite trees are in full bloom.

Bill and Linda built a party pad under 5 oak trees which are in the same root system.

Harvey attending to Rascal on a sprawling tree limb. Zoom in to read the sign❤️

It was a lovely gathering of the ten of us, and a leashed cat and 2 small dogs following the shade (84 degrees) into the dinner hour. We all went to our respective habitats for an hour to have dinner and then went back to the party pad with our instruments - it’s a late night tonight as sunset is at 8pm. Music was in the air. It was so good to play music with Harvey again - and the harmonicas too.

I will share all of the beauty of this property and visiting animals in next week's blog.

Apricity West 4

March 22, 2024 - Friday
Went over to Terri and Jim’s after lunch to practice playing Happy Birthday for our Mom - Ukulele, harmonica, piano, and a new instrument, kazoo. After many laughs and a final video recording, Terri made us a grilled shrimp salad (with a little heat) accompanied by artisan bread and olive oil dip.

March 23, 2024 - Saturday  HAPPY 94TH BIRTHDAY, MOM
Stormy weather postponed plans for my sisters, Cindy and Leslie, to take her to lunch until next week. Terri and I called her on our way to Patagonia to wish her happy birthday. Thanks to modern technology, she had already heard from friends and family by phone or Facebook. She loves kitties - this is the card we sent…

We packed the car with a picnic lunch (baked chicken, potato salad, fresh veggies ’n dip), layers of clothes to keep warm as it was a windy, cloudy, cooler day. Jim drove us on a picturesque ride south toward Mexico, destination Patagonia Lake State Park. We had hoped to see more flowers than we did, but the terrain was fascinating - very rough grasslands with dry brush with layers of  hills with mountain peaks in the far background.

As we got closer to the lake, mesquite and cottonwood trees were abundant along the roadside. Upon entering the park, there was a parking lot with about 30 trucks with boat trailers attached. It just seems such a contrast to the desert view for the last hour and a half. As the lake came into sight, you could see a beautiful wooden arched walking bridge in the distance.

We made our way to the picnic area on the no-wake side of the 265-acre manmade lake. Folks of all ages were angling off the shore, in kayaks or on bass boats puttering by in pursuit of crappie, bass, bluegill and catfish. We found a ramada to our liking with a view down through the trees of the water and set up our table with all of the goodies.

After filling our bellies, we packed up the car and drove around the park to see the beach, the rental cabins, the RV park, and the motor-boating end of the lake.

The songs of the birds were amazing - a chorus of a diverse variety of birds. Several species of hummingbirds were seen zooming in and out of the flowers and feeders near the Information Center.

Stopped in Patagonia on the way home to enjoy a brew for others, and a Very Ginger Cider for me.

Took a stroll down the street and peeked in at the Stage Stop Hotel...

Notice the cattle branding symbols on the floor tiles...

An inviting bakery was next, Gathering Grounds, so we stopped for a hot tea and homemade ginger and chocolate chip cookies.

I was then successful in finding the token gifts to take home in a really cool gift shop, Patagonia Trading Post.

My 12-year-old grandson, Zachary, FaceTimed me to show me his new do - I told him I would do mine again before I get home so we can be twins...

March 24, 2024 - Sunday
Last night’s rain storm was fierce - very heavy rain and strong winds.

Since time is running out, we finally went to Indian Twist, for a wonderful banquet of garlic naan, spicy Masala, curried lamb, Butter chicken, and Korma veggies with Indian rice. The sauces are sooooo delicious that we had to try all four of them. The favorite is the common Masala!

Evening cocktails a la Jim - Margaritas and Old Fashions…

March 25, 2024 - Monday
Went to Fry’s to shop as we prepare to pull up stakes and start making our way to Mason, TX for a Total Solar Eclipse Party. More news to come...
I did the usual - daily word puzzles, yoga, ukulele, a little coloring, and a walk between rain drops. Marilyn came for a visit and we had her stay for a light dinner of chicken and roasted cauliflower and broccoli. Always a lively conversation.

March 26, 2024 - Tuesday
More intermittent rain today, so walked when it cleared up, then did yoga and finished coloring Rich’s owl. He ordered Iron Flask water bottles for us and they arrived today. Guess which one is mine.

March 27, 2024 - Wednesday
A beautiful day today! After walking, puzzling, and ukulele-ing, Rich and I went for amazing pedicures at Final Touch. They are pretty high tech with a digital sign-in system as they are WALK-INS ONLY! One of the treatments was two colors of nail polish manipulated using small magnets into various designs. I did not get it, but the client next to me did. Very nice.

Marilyn came over with extra yarn to supply my yarn fix for a project to work on as we head home.

March 28, 2024 - Thursday
Costco trip today so that Marilyn doesn’t have to pull into their parking lot towing her Casita. We have not shopped at Costco in a year, so it was fun to see the abundance of goods they offer. We arrived 15 minutes before they opened and there was a line of 10 shoppers forming. It wasn’t bad at the start but soon after it was like an obstacle course with people darting to find their coveted items - it is Easter week after all! We made it out in about 40 minutes and loaded Shadow up with the goods to take back to the Crazy Horse.

We met Terri for lunch at Sa-ing Thai and had a delicious curry dish. She came over to the park and we got to chill on our little patio; Marilyn joined us and got to see Terri again. They met while we were here last year.

Another stunning Arizona sunset...

Apricity West 4

March 15, 2024 - Friday
Hung out at our place until after lunch, then headed over to T&J’s where Terri prepared pork tenderloin, green beans, and a surprise corn pudding dish. Yum!

March 16, 2024 - Saturday
My grandsons had a football fundraiser last year selling Liege Waffles of various flavors. Jim had traveled to Belgium on a bike trip so I thought they would enjoy the frozen goodies, which I had shipped to them. They were good enough to save some to share with us, so this morning was the day. Jim served up scrambled eggs, bacon, and assorted Liege Waffle niblets with the fixings.

All four of us Bickford girls took piano lessons from our neighbor, Jackie Abbott. I haven’t played in decades, but Terri has focused in since her retirement last summer. Just for kicks I tried playing The Breakers which was a piece we all learned for recitals. Terri re-taught me and I was surprised that it came back to me - somewhat. Then we tried Heart and Soul - she on chords, me on single notes. Jim recorded it and we sent it to my mom and sisters. See a short clip in the body of the email.

Today’s plan is a little different than usual - the boys are going to a Whiskey tasting and Terri and I are going to the movies. I haven’t been to a movie or had theater popcorn in at least 5 years. We saw American Fiction which we really enjoyed. The storyline and the casting were very good.

Here are some pictures that Jim took of their adventure...

Rich, the shopper, came home with a bottle of Del Bac and a glass, as well as a metal road runner similar to the one Jim bought in Tubac.

Terri made another delicious soup - Southwestern Enchilada.

Our neighbors are delighted with their new Fleetwood RV which has 2 slides that they did not have in the last unit. The slides made it so much roomier and the upgrade is amazing I'm sure.

March 17, 2024 - Sunday Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️
There was a sculpture show in Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, so we checked it out. Wow! What a display of sculptures in the distance, but first we visited the memorial. Brandi was about to turn 14 years old when her life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident in 2003. She loved butterflies which is the theme of the structure.

Others have set up bronze memorials for children lost at a young age.

Take a virtual tour with me through this display of amazing art...

There is a reason for all of the food we are eating - we are running out of time to share our personal recipes! Tonight Rich made corned beef with cabbage and carrots boiled dinner. Perfect!

March 18, 2024 - Monday
Lazy day after our heavy hitting weekend. I did walk and Rich did do art. He actually drew the owl in pen and ink already.

March 19, 2024 - Tuesday
Went to the print shop to have copies made of the owl before coloring it. I will color it myself, but Rich did one version of his own below. One day I want to publish his black and white drawings as a coloring book.

We had Marilyn over for shrimp scampi, and air fried sweet potato fries. She contributed some of her delicious Beluga black lentils as an appetizer with Kettle chips. And she shared a pan of asparagus, onions, and celery cooked down in olive oil. Both of these dishes are sprinkled with her signature seasoned salt.

March 20, 2024 - Wednesday
Did my usual walk. I am stuck on my crochet project as I have to wait 2 weeks between shipments! Because they can’t pin down a date to ship again due to inventory fluctuation, etc. So I pulled out the Summer Love Wrap piece I have been working on and off for over a year. It is frustrating because I made several of these prayer shawls for dear friends of mine in the past, yet have struggled this year to get the pattern right! Well, totally determined and focused I finally did get it right now, so can work on it for the duration of this trek. 😊

March 21 2024 - Thursday
Rich has been so productive with his art and I, as the administrator, have NOT kept up with cataloguing his pieces and updating his website. Today is the day I will at least get started on the 37 new items.
✅ I added everything as $4 cards, but they are also available as 11x17 Mattes! Check it out at Richartcreations.com

Here are a couple of samples:
